F-1 Student Seminar
Ever Green Academy

Ms. Laureen Park joined Consul Woo Seok Cho from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to present a seminar for the F-1 international students at the Ever Green Academy. The discussion included consular process at the Embassy for the Korean nationals, as well as U.S. immigration law and policy affecting F-1 students. Ms. Park would like to thank Consul Cho and Dean Dwayne Sammons for this opportunity to serve the Korean nationals and other international students at the Ever Green Academy.

University of Maryland School of Law
Asper Fellowship Program

Ms. Pooja A. Regmi was an invited guest speaker for the students participating in the Asper Fellowship Program at the University of Maryland School of Law.
The Asper Program offers UM law students the opportunity to obtain credit for supervised law-related work with state and federal judges and with attorneys employed by government agencies and public interest organizations. As an alumni of the UM Law and a former participant of the Asper Program, Ms. Regmi had an opportunity to work for the Hon. Judge Hargadon in the Juvenile Division for Circuit Court for Baltimore City in the Spring of 2004. Ms. Regmi shared her knowledge and experience about her career in public interest and private practice, operating a successful law practice, and being an immigration lawyer. Ms. Regmi wishes to thank Ms. Teresa Schmiedeler for the opportunity.

Ms. Laureen Park and Ms. Pooja Regmi were invited guest speakers at the Immigration Forum, where they presented overview of the U.S. immigration law to the Nepali community. Various topics of discussion included asylum, work visa, student visa, obtaining a green card through family or employer, naturalization to be a U.S. citizen, and deportation/removal proceedings.

Pri-Med Mid-Atlantic Conference
Location: Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore MD
Date: Dec. 4, 2009
Ms. Pooja Regmi, a member of the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Fellowship from 2003-2004, was an invited guest speaker at the Pri-Med Mid-Atlantic Conference. Ms. Regmi was one of the three featured guest speakers following Dr. Lachlan Forrow’s keynote address titled, “Medicine, Healing and Service: How We Can All Make a Difference in the Social Sector.”
Ms. Regmi spoke about her Schweitzer Fellowship project and her personal immigration journey. She connected how the two have influenced her to serve others and led to her career practicing immigration law. The event was attended by hundreds of clinicians, nurses and doctors from the Mid-Atlantic region. After the key-note address, Ms. Regmi participated in a “meet and greet” with the attendees from the conference.

1st Asian Pacific Islander Citizenship Day
Location: Executive Office Building, Rockville MD
Date: Nov. 14, 2009
Ms. Laureen Park attended the Citizenship Day to volunteer 1-on-1 consultations to help diverse immigrant community members on becoming a U.S. citizen. Ms. Park helped individual complete applications to become a U.S. citizen, as well as answer any questions regarding general immigration.
The community coalition organizations sponsoring this event included: Asian Pacific America Legal Resource Center (APALRC), Boat People SOS-Maryland (BPSOS-MD), Chinese Culture and Community Service Center (CCACC), Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington (KCSC), Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association, Inc. (MVMA), and South Asian Americans Leading Together (SASLT).

India Independence Day Festival

Ms. Pooja Regmi and Ms. Laureen Park participated in the India Independence Day Festival to celebrate India’s rich culture, tradition, and heritage. On behalf of RSPR Law, the attorneys answered various immigration questions to community members who attended the festival. Mr. Michael Stelmack was an invited speaker of the Expo on Estate Planning. The Expo offered free workshops on important financial management issues presented by a variety of partners, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community service providers. Community members were invited to learn about how to prevent or mitigate losses in the event of looming debt and/or foreclosure, natural disasters and gain access to information and resources dedicated to financial literacy and emergency preparedness. Mr. Stelmack presented panel on “Securing Your Assets: Home Buying, Estate Planning and Avoiding Dangerous Pitfalls”.

U Visa Community Partner Training

Ms. Laureen Park participated in APALRC sponsored community initiative to educate and train Asian community members about the benefits and eligibility of U visas. Many immigrant victims of crime suffer in silence due to their limited English proficiency and uncertain immigration status. “U visas” are special visas available to certain immigrant victims of crime who cooperate with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute those crimes.
